Support and training for Governors and Clerks

The East Sussex Governor and Clerking Service (GCS) is designed to provide high quality support and advice on a range of issues, both large and small.  There is a wide range of training and support available and we’ve highlighted a few of these below.  Use our course directory to search for all available training, or visit the new website for the Governor and Clerking Service here where you will need to log in to the East Sussex Learning Portal to view costs.

New Governors are invited to attend an induction course, to make them aware of all the resources and training available to help them understand more about the role and to develop their knowledge and skills.  Induction is available as a one day course or spread over two evenings in consecutive weeks. To get the full benefit of the programme governors should attend both sessions.

The next dates are Tuesday 23rd March  running from 10.00 to 15.30 or alternatively there are sessions on Wednesday 12 May and Saturday 12 June

There will be an Induction to Schools Finance for Governors on 9th June or existing Governors may like to attend the course on Schools Finance – Developing Financial Management in Schools or the Governor Finance Briefings that are taking place on 12th March  and 18th March

Many governors are dealing with very complex issues within their schools, and to support this, there are sessions in May on Managing and Avoiding Potential Conflicts and Complaints and Handling School Complaints.

The pandemic has put pressure on all staff involved in education and on 30th March there will be a network meeting on Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing. The session will explore the findings of the recent governors’ survey and focuses on the key challenges for schools and colleges due to the pandemic. There will be practical resources and time for questions and discussion.

The Governor and Clerking Service have expressed that they are very mindful that in the current climate, there is often immense pressure put on governors who may also be dealing with challenging personal circumstances. The Networking sessions that on offer are a space for you to come and relieve some of that pressure by sharing stories with other governors, exchanging best practice and troubleshooting any complex issues.

A full range of information can be found on the Governor and Clerking Service website and use our course directory to find a full range of available training.
